Q: What if my child is going to miss school and I know ahead of time?
A: Please send a note or email about late arrivals as well as planned absences. Because many assignments are not duplicated until the day before use, work will mostly be sent following the absence, at our discretion. Travel during school time is discouraged. The school phone number is 763-315-6400.
Q: What if my child is not going home after school the usual way?
A: SEND A NOTE! We can't take the child's word for any changes, because they often get the day of the change wrong. You can call or e-mail, but not the same day as the change, just in case we don't have time to listen to messages or read e-mail before dismissal.
Q: What about after school activities?
A: If your child is attending an after school class, we must have a note or he/she will be sent home the usual way. We don't always get lists of these activities.
Q: Do you need volunteer help?
A: Yes! There are many clerical jobs that need doing to prepare materials for lessons, as well as students who need more adult help practicing skills during the school day. Pencil sharpening is a big need and can be done at home and at school. Let us know if you want to help in any way!
Q: How do you communicate with parents?
A: Check the "Second Grade Blog" tab on this website frequently. We all have newsletters, blogs and websites that are updated at least monthly. Each week the "Wednesday Mail" comes home with notes and IMPORTANT information for you. Most importantly, your child's papers tell a story. We will call or email if we need to speak to you, and please feel comfortable contacting us if you have questions. 763.315.6400 Email links are listed under the "Contact" tab.
Q: Do you send home book orders?
A: Yes, we all send home several book orders throughout the year. We can only accept cash or a check made out to the book club by name. Another option is to order online. Credit cards are accepted. Each order has a few books under $1.00 or $2.00. Motivating kids to read is worth the investment!
Q: May I eat lunch with my child?
A: Yes. please call the office ahead of time (by 10:00am) so the cooks know to make your meal. The payment can come out of your child's lunch account.
Q: How do you celebrate birthdays?
A: We do a small celebration in our homerooms. Woodland does not support birthday treats. Please save them for celebrating at home.
Q: Do you give homework?
A: Yes. About 20 minutes of homework is assigned each night. A homework schedule will be shared by your specific homeroom teacher, and can be reviewed by clicking on the "Homework Procedures" tab . Deviations from these plans usually only occur close to vacations and when we are testing at the end of curriculum units or report card time.
Students are required to finish and return homework the following day unless otherwise stated. Woodland requires that all students attend power study hall during recess if homework is incomplete.
Q: Do you have a behavior plan?
A: All second grade rooms have the "CARE" plan: Cooperation, Attitude, and Respect in Education. These broad guidelines are explained in our Second Grade book that you received during Open House. They form the basis for classroom expectations.
The actual practical plan for our classrooms change from year to year, in response to the class needs.
